When I traveled to Israel last summer, I asked an IDF soldier that was with my group to recommend a good Israeli band.
She took me to Tower Records in the Jerusalem mall, and I ended up buying the first album by Hayehudim (The Jews), a husband-and-wife team that is one of the most popular bands in Israel. Their songs are a mix of hard rock (with a touch of heavy metal) and soft ballads. The band’s website (in Hebrew) is here.
I have all their albums now, and I just found YouTube videos of their unplugged performance in Tel Aviv. Here are four of them:
“Taazor Li (Save Me)” — a fast song about a woman who hates that she loves her lazy, loutish boyfriend
“Mechapes Tshuva (Looking for an Answer)” — a slow, philosophical song about a guy who goes through drugs, religion and various things to find “the answer”
“Father” — a sad song in English about the woman’s father
“Od Aron Echad (Another Coffin)” — an fast, alternating duet that (I think) is about two lovers in the middle of a fight
Addendum: I had to add one more.
“HaZman Shelach (Your Time)” — one of their most powerful songs — it’s about a troubled teenage girl who deals with an eating disorder and breaking up with her boyfriend
Now Available: E-Book download: “Letters from Israel: An American journalist’s adventures in the Holy Land.”
