Teachers are dropping controversial subjects such as the Holocaust and the Crusades from history lessons because they do not want to cause offence to children from certain races or religions, a report claims.
The Crusades is indeed a complex and volatile subject. But the Holocaust? C’mon. That was one of the few times in history where the issue was black-and-white.
The only people who would be offended at the teaching of the Holocaust are those who are one or both of the following: an anti-Semite or a Holocaust denier. Frankly, I don’t give a damn if a person in one of those two groups is offended. And neither should anyone else.
One of the primary purposes of history is to learn from our mistakes so humanity does not repeat them. That is why it is crucial to teach about the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, Rwanda, Darfur, slavery, and a host of other travesties.

I completely agree with you 100%. It is ridiculous that we are not taught these things in school. I am a 9th grade student in Toronto and i am tired of learning about the same canadien history year after year, after year. Those taboo topics may be a little risque but everyone should know what happened and why. Im writing a paper on the concentration camps for english class (not history) because we are reading Anne Frank and I dont no much because we havent been taught any of it in history class. It is interesting to hear this from someone else because i have thought so for a long time.

I have seen the Israelis build a wall stronger than The Berlin Wall inside the Palestinian territory. I have seen an Israeli attack helicopter shot to a crowd made many people died and wounded. Have you ever heard that an Israel warship shot to a beach full of Palestinians? Well, I have!
But why when the Palestinians fought back, the whole world say that they’re terrorists. When they hit a Merkava tank with a rock, the tank shot its machine guns. When the Israeli soldiers enter the Palestinian territory during “an operation”, they destroy everything they suspect, including civilian houses, schools, even hospitals.
C’mon, people! The Israelis has taken their land. They got rid of the Palestinians. They torture the Palestinians every single day.
I think people must be objective to see the Palestinians and the Israelis. My advice to Israel is: don’t let other nations think that you are so much alike with the Germany and Hitler during the WW II. You have suffered the pain, why do you make other people feels the same pain?

Up until a few days ago, i had never bothered myself with the happenings of the holocaust (blame it on my ignorance) but only vaguely knew that Hitler was infact responsible for the killings of many jews. The numbers and other ethnic and social groups was highly underestimated.
I have recently come across “The diary of a young girl” by Anne Frank and took it upon myself to educate myself of the actual incidents that occured. I am horrified and disgusted that other human beings could have inflicted that much pain on others and am especially horrified of the “experiments” they carried out on children and infants. Now, I realise that I have no inkling of what is going on up there between the Israeli and the Palestinians but I do know that God is watching our actions and is probably mortified of our actions. What exactly are these people fighting for or about?
But coming from a country of the history that we’ve overcome, South Africa, I do somewhat understand the resentment and anger manifesting in these countries. For one, I am black and to top it all, I am female. I have come a long way from the times when my grandma was tortured to death for being those things. I do understand that racism still exists in South Africa but I will not be defined and reduced to live in fear of being seen as a “dirty” race because of my colour and gender.
I feel, Germans are in general are a very sick nation and so only empathise with those that were born into it without those views. Afrikaaner came from there and so you understand my theories!!

The one thing that annoys me about this discussion is some people’s arrogance with regard to foreign opinion. I am a South African. I grew up in Germany and in Israel over a period of 2 and 3 years respectively. I now teach in a typical East London school with a majority Muslim intake.
It is true that sensitive issues like the Holocaust needs to be approached very carefully, but it has to be taught, since it is true that we should learn from our past.
It is also true that WWII touched many nations citizens lives, not only the “Jews”. Others were persecuted as well! So when I read a statement like, “You Americans, and it didn’t affect you etc etc.” I just plain get angry! A lot of nations lost the lives of soldiers in the war, fighting which led to the freedom of many still imprisoned in concentration camps. So have a little respect!
Having lived in Israel, I’ve come to see that the issue with regards to Palestine is very difficult! I agree that they should have a homeland, just as I agree with the existence of Israel. A compromise will need to be reached for both to co-exist, or the fighting will never cease! FACT!
One thing I want to make clear is that, as a Christian, I cannot agree with fighting and violence. I don’t accept any form of terrorism, or of an organization which vows to end the existence of Israel. Suicide bombings will always show me the BAD side of the Muslim religion. A lot of Muslims say it is not part of their religion but abuse of it. Yet, I’ve never seen a clear and loud resistance by peaceloving Muslims towards these acts, rather a SILENT acceptance and will for it!!! Until I see this happen, I will not get actively involved in helping the Palestinian cause! It’s time to speak up and condemn these kind of acts!

I agree that children and even adults should be taught about the worlds history. i think that the people that are offended by any subject of history are completely selfish. If these milestones had not happened they would still be suffering. For those exact happenings, they are now treated equally. i think people need to stop being foolish and relize the history.

Being that I am Jewish, I have noticed that only once has the school I attend in Minnesota mention the Holocaust. My English teacher in grade had a sort of fascination with it…
What hurt me was that we had to do a project on it, and a boy in my class wrote an entire essay on how it all never happened. I cried during class, it was terrible.
I think people should definitely be more aware of the non-Jews that were killed as well. They’re mentioned, but people like gays, mentally retarded, gypsies, etc… are all mostly forgotten.
