Peter, I'm not saying that everyone should dump religion. I'm saying (among other points) that religion and irrationality should not be the primary influences on matters of public policy.

The way this article is presented highlights the downside of belief and the upside of the enlightenment. The Enlightenment was one of the starting points for the Industrial Age, which we can equate with modernism. The conflicts of the Twentieth Century where primarily secular in nature. The century's greatest's tyrants, Hitler and Stalin, where not motivated by a religious agenda. The communists have gone farthest in secularising the state - and look at the consequences. One observer noted that the 20th Century was a failed secular experiment.

To progress religion and science must agree. We must learn to live in the intersection of these two great world views. Religion without science leads to superstition and science without religion leads to unbridled materialism.

rcronk,

Good point -- the humble and the prideful are very applicable terms. True Believers are arrogant enough to "know" that they are correct whereas Skeptics are humble enough to know how little we know.

Good article - I really like how objective and principle-based it is. Such objectivity is a rare thing to find. It's difficult to come up with a solution to this problem. I wonder if another set of titles would apply to the true believer and the skeptic: the humble and the prideful?

This is a most amazing article and I do believe in your last paragraph, but I do not think it will happen. I think power and greed has so corrupted all groups, that they will never agree to agree. It may take some cataclysmic event of Mother Nature to bring us all together again, but alas, I think its name is Armageddon and it will be too late.
