Bad Marketing-Tool: Tell Them About the Discount, Harry!

marketing toolI like listening to 100.7 WZLX-FM during the day — I love classic rock. But I don’t think I can take it anymore. The radio station plays a commercial for Sunsetter Awnings at least twice an hour that goes roughly like this and is a bad marketing-tool:

A husband is talking about the benefits of the product. His wife interjects: “Tell them about the discount, Harry!” The husband ignores her and continues talking. The wife repeats herself, only in an increasingly shrill tone: “Tell them about the discount, Harry!” The husband ignores her again and keeps talking. Finally, the wife pleads and whines: “HARRYYYYY!” The husband surrenders and whines, saying “All RIGHT…” He talks about the discount. But here’s the kicker. The commercial ends with the wife saying “Good, Harry!” to her husband in the condescending tone of voice that one would use with a dog.”

If you’ve heard the commercial, you know what I mean. I will never, ever purchase anything from Sunsetter Awnings. I’m on the verge of shutting off the radio as well. And is seems that I’m not the only one — see here, here, here, here, here and here.

As I stated in a prior post, I’m increasingly tired of the preponderance of anti-male television shows and commercials. If the tables were turned and women were constantly portrayed in such a manner, I guarantee that the National Organization of Women would be up in arms. But whenever it’s men, it’s OK. Right?

Addendum: Read this column on the anti-male culture in the United States.
