Climate Change

February 27th, 2008 · Europe, Great Britain and Ireland, The Environment

There seems to be a consensus that the planet’s climate is changing. But the real question is whether we will be facing global warming or global cooling.

I think it will be a combination of both. What many people do not realize is that “climate change” is more accurate than “global warming.” An increase in greenhouse gases will not cause every place on the planet to become warmer. It’s more complicated than that. The United States would become warmer and more humid, but Great Britain would become much colder once an increase in the ocean’s temperature forces the Gulf Stream to slow or even stop. Deserts, like here in the Middle East, will become cooler and drier.

So, in a sense, both camps are correct. The climate is changing, but in paradoxical ways. It will be up to humanity to adapt.
