Oppressed, Redundant Men

February 26th, 2010 · Dating and Relationships

JERUSALEM — The first of a five-part British documentary on the state of men and manliness in a modern, Western society through online-dating websites, Christian-dating websites, and an online-dating agency:

Men and masculinity are being marginalised. Manly virtues are laughed at, even considered dysfunctional. Men are being edged out of the family, the workplace and wider society as the game of life is increasingly played by women’s rules…”

And here are some news updates: A court ruled that an adulterous wife must receive child-support from the her husband even though the child was not his. Many divorced men — who did nothing wrong — must fight tooth-and nail in court to see their children more than a few times a month. Media outlets use language — subconsciously and unknowingly — to hide men and highlight women. A judge admits to giving a woman a lesser sentence than a men would have received for the same crime.

A “Psychology Today” article praises a woman who killed her cheating husband in front of their teenage daughter — and received countless sympathy from the media even though there would have been outrage if the roles had been reversed. Male victims of domestic violence are ignored. An Australian law looks to criminalize something called “economic abuse” in separated families. Female teachers who have sex with students receive lighter sentences than men — when both should have the judicial books thrown at them.

And here is a collection of anti-male advertisements and messages that permeate the media (see here as well):

Although, to be fair, I must note that the same is now occurring in Israeli commercials as well:

Enjoy. Although that’s probably not the correct term.

Earlier: When Men are Portrayed as Idiots.
