Globalization and Sports

JERUSALEM — Joe Queenan seemingly dislikes foreign fans of sports teams (those who who are not from the cities of those teams): I do not object to Yankees fans in principle, so long as they are homegrown, preferably natives of the Bronx or Yonkers. (Yankees fans born in Queens or Brooklyn, it goes without saying, […]

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts — When I was editor and publisher of Spare Change News in Boston, I took the newspaper’s staff out to the Grafton Street Pub & Grill in 2006 for Red Sox Opening Day. I had been wanting to treat them to some burgers and beers since everyone had been working so hard to […]

JERUSALEM — I didn’t study the teams in the NCAA tournament this year since I’m in Israel, so I don’t know anything about the teams right now. But for what it’s worth, here are my favorites in the regional semifinals: UNI over Michigan — I just never really liked Michigan. Too cold Ohio State over Tennessee […]

One to Watch

March 3rd, 2010 · 3 Comments · Baseball, Feminism, Japan, Red Sox, Sports, The Boston Globe

Baseball hasn’t had much room for women.  That may soon change, however – if only a little, as the Boston Globe reports on a female knuckleballer from Japan. The knuckleball not needing speed but relying rather on unpredictability, I really think this girl has a chance.  Maybe she’ll replace Wake when he retires? Continue reading

RISHON LEZION, Israel — The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees will play on Opening Day on April 4. I am eager for revenge because, after the World Series victory by the Evil Empire, I owe a friend a steak dinner at El Gaucho in Israel Continue reading

Baseball from Israel

RISHON LEZION, Israel — On my first trip to Israel three years ago, I was leaving the Holocaust Memorial when a passerby in the parking lot yelled out, “Go Yankees!” I was wearing my Red Sox hat at the time. It seems that the Greatest Rivalry in All of Sports follows you anywhere, even ten […]
